The approval of edible insects as novel food in the European Union (EU) presents several challenges. Firstly, there is a need to establish regulatory frameworks and safety standards for insect-based food products. This involves assessing potential allergenicity, microbiological risks, and chemical contaminants, as well as ensuring proper labeling and consumer information.
Consumer perception and acceptance of edible insects present an additional challenge. Effective communication and educational activities are necessary to overcome cultural barriers and dispel myths about eating insects. For the market to grow, consumer awareness and willingness to try items made from insects are crucial.
Furthermore, establishing sustainable and traceable supply chains for insect farming poses logistical challenges. Standardized farming methods development, dependable insect larvae sourcing, and adherence to quality control standards are essential for market acceptance and penetration.
