The insect economy is growing rapidly in the world and the outlook is staggering.
There has been a strong investment in insect economy research and development in recent years.
“Insect economy research and development work has been done in a company-driven manner. The largest companies have received hundreds of millions in investments. All successful insect companies have strong research partners, ”says Susanne Heiska, a specialist researcher at the Natural Resources Center (Luke).
According to Heiska, insect research conferences have multiplied over the past couple of years. The number of scientific publications in the field has also increased dramatically.
Luke’s specialist researcher Juha-Matti Katajajuuri believes that there would be a huge potential for growth in the utilization of insects on an industrial scale in the world and in Finland. Protein from insects could replace other proteins.
“We certainly have growth potential in the soybean and fishmeal markets, for example.”
“Insect farming has been part of international production animal meetings since about 2017, and has quickly established itself in them,” Katajajuuri says.
