In a world where sustainable practices are at the forefront of innovation, Foodscale Hub recently orchestrated a captivating webinar, beckoning a diverse audience to explore the transformative potential of insect farming for sustainable food production. This virtual event spotlighted two groundbreaking projects – CoRoSect and INCiTiS-FOOD – unveiling the remarkable possibilities within the realm of insect agriculture.
The webinar not only promised but delivered a truly insightful experience, with Maria Alexandrova Head of Innovation Projects and Sustainability at Nasekomo, Dr. Steve Omondi Oduor and Prof. Dr. George Owuor from the Egerton University, and representatives from InsectiPro, Nina de Groot and Maurice Kimani headlining the event.
The webinar, aptly titled “Insect Farming – Perspectives from Africa and Europe,” transcended geographical boundaries to deliver insights that left us buzzing with inspiration. The webinar unfolded a tapestry of crucial insights, painting a vivid picture of the role insect farming plays in shaping a sustainable future. The Black Soldier Flies took center stage, revolutionizing the way we produce food sustainably and contributing significantly to a greener planet. Waste reduction emerged as a key theme, with a deep dive into how insect farming, particularly with Black Soldier Flies, efficiently converts organic matter, playing a pivotal role in waste reduction.
The discussion expanded to the circular systems orchestrated by these insects, where their end-products find diverse uses, from protein to oil to fertilizers, amplifying food sustainability. Scaling challenges were also addressed, delving into the hurdles and strategies to overcome them for a more sustainable future. The webinar bridged continents, offering perspectives from both Africa and Europe on how insect farming contributes to circular food systems.
Foodscale Hub extends its appreciation to the esteemed experts and over 30 participants who made this webinar a resounding success.
